Social apps typically re-encode images as JPEG (or a similar lossy format) to save bandwidth. That process discards high-frequency detail again. It does not run a deblur algorithm. If your redacted region is already a flat mosaic or a solid fill, the encoder has nothing informative left to “restore” inside that region — only the destroyed pattern and its edges.

Destroyed detail is not present for compression to recover

Compression approximates what is in the bitmap. Averaged pixelate cells and solid black boxes are low-information regions. Re-encoding may slightly change block boundaries or introduce mild ringing at the edge of a cover, but it cannot reconstruct eyes, digits, or plate characters that were overwritten before the file left your device.

That is the reassuring half of the answer: a verified strong redaction survives the platform’s size reduction. The platform is not secretly holding a sharp original if you never sent one.

The real failure mode is weak cover plus another copy

Light blur that left facial structure intact still leaves structure after recompression. Large pixel blocks on a tiny face might look “done” in the composer and still read at desktop zoom. Separately, someone may re-share a higher-resolution copy from another source — a story screenshot is not the only path. Compression did not undo the redaction; the redaction never fully destroyed the signal, or another file still had it.

Order of operations: cover before the platform sees the file

If you post a sharp original and then try to cover it with in-app stickers, the platform (and sometimes caches, collaborators, or downloaders) may still have seen or retained the unmarked image depending on product behavior. Covering in a client-side tool first — then posting only the redacted export — means the platform’s pipeline only ever receives the already-destroyed pixels.
