Android photos are camera JPEGs, WhatsApp images, and screenshots that all live in slightly different folders. Samsung Gallery, Google Photos, and Files are not the same pile. The share sheet will still prefer the unmarked original you just snapped. This page is the Android-specific path: Chrome, the system picker, a finger on a glass screen, and Downloads as the place the PNG actually lands.
A generic cover session is redact an image online free. A posting-habit page is censor a photo before posting. Stay here for the phone: how to pick the file on Android, how to draw a box that survives zoom, and how not to attach the camera original after you already covered a copy in Chrome.
Guide
Android’s privacy failures around redaction are mostly picker failures. You covered a JPEG in a browser tab. Google Photos still has the camera original. WhatsApp still has the received original. Downloads has the PNG. Three objects, one thumbnail. The share sheet does not know which one you meant. Your job is to know the path: Chrome, named PNG, Files → Downloads.
HideShot on this page is the same three modes as desktop: Black Box, Blur, Pixelate. Use a black box on identifiers. Use a heavy mosaic or blur on a bystander only after you pinch-zoom the export. A finger is imprecise. Leave a margin.
What to cover on an Android photo — and why
Camera photos: faces you did not mean to publish, house numbers, license plates, a badge, a laptop screen in the background, a child’s artwork with a name. Screenshots: account strings, tokens, map pins, notification shade contents if you captured with the shade down. WhatsApp or Messenger images you are forwarding: the previous sender’s caption burned into a screenshot, or a second chat preview.
Android screenshots often include navigation-bar buttons and a timestamp. They also include the notification peek if you captured during an alert. Cover the peek. Samsung and Pixel capture tools sometimes save a ‘scroll capture’ that is taller than the screen; walk the whole strip, not only the first viewport.
HEIC is less common on Android than on iPhone, but some camera apps still write it. This canvas wants a JPEG, PNG, WebP, or GIF. If the picker greyed the file out, convert or re-save as JPEG in Photos first, then cover that JPEG. Covering pixels does not strip GPS. A perfectly boxed house number can still sit next to a geotag. That is a metadata job on a different tool after you have a PNG you are willing to share.
How to redact in Chrome on Android
- Leave the chat app. In-app custom tabs inside WhatsApp, Gmail, or a bank app mishandle file pickers and downloads. Open Chrome from the launcher.
- Tap the drop zone on this page. In the system picker, use Files or Downloads if you already saved the image there. Google Photos is fine if you are deliberately choosing the camera file — just remember the original stays in Photos after you cover a copy in the tab.
- Rotate to landscape for a wide screenshot. Draw Black Box regions larger than the text. Undo exists; a missed serif is cheaper to fix now than after you posted.
- Download the PNG and open it from Files. Pinch past 100%. Walk every edge. Repeat in the tab if needed.
- Attach from Downloads in Files. Do not use Photos’ ‘share this item’ on the unmarked JPEG.
Some OEM browsers (Samsung Internet) also work. If downloads vanish into a Samsung ‘My Files’ folder you never open, look there before you assume the export failed. Chrome’s Downloads is the default mental model; Samsung’s is a parallel drawer.
Android-only scenarios
A Marketplace listing photo with a kid in the doorway and a plate in the driveway. Cover both. Then share the PNG. Google Photos will still have the original for you; the listing should get the covered file. Posting hygiene in general is censor a photo before posting.
A Pixel or Samsung screenshot of a banking app, captured with a fingerprint prompt still on screen. Cover the prompt and the account line. The PNG is what support or a partner should see.
A photo that arrived in WhatsApp that you need to forward without a house number. Cover in Chrome, send the PNG as a document/file if you need to avoid WhatsApp recompressing a tiny preview — and still do not forward the unmarked original from the chat thread.
A work profile vs personal profile split. If the photo lives in the work profile’s Photos, open Chrome in that profile or copy the file to a place this tab can reach. Cross-profile pickers are easy to get wrong; you can cover one copy and attach the other.
Mistakes that show up on Android more than desktop
Using Google Photos markup, then sharing ‘the photo’ from the library. The library item may still be the original, or an edit that is not the PNG you inspected. Share the HideShot download from Files.
Letting WhatsApp recompress a tiny JPEG while you still have a sharp unmarked original in the thread. Cover first. Send the covered file. The thread original is still there for you; do not tap it ‘for quality.’
Drawing with a thumb on a 4K photo at fit-width zoom. Pinch the canvas. Leave a margin. Black-box identifiers.
Assuming a Work profile Chrome download is what personal Gmail will attach. Check which profile’s Downloads you are in.
A longer desktop-oriented cover session is redact an image online free. This page is Chrome-on-Android.
