Searchers often arrive from the same mental model: ‘I blurred a face in a photo, so I will blur a face in a video.’ The tools feel similar. The problem is not. A photograph is a single coordinate system. Video is a sequence — motion, motion blur, autofocus breathing, rolling shutter, and compression between frames all change where the sensitive pixels land from one instant to the next.

Redacting a photo is a spatial problem: which rectangles on this bitmap must change. Redacting a video is spatiotemporal: which regions on each frame, and how masks propagate when objects accelerate, occlude, or leave the frame. Professional body-cam and courtroom workflows use dedicated tools with trackers or manual keyframing for that reason.

Frame-by-frame versus one-and-done

On a still, you draw once, export once, verify once. On a ten-second phone clip at 30 fps you have three hundred frames. A face can translate, scale, and rotate. A static blur oval centered on frame 1 will slide off the cheek by frame 90 unless someone or something updates the mask. Manual keyframing — move box, move box, move box — is tedious and error-prone. Automatic trackers can fail on motion blur, similar-looking bystanders, or sudden cuts.

Compression adds another layer. Inter-frame codecs (H.264, HEVC) store keyframes and predicted deltas. A blur applied in an editor may be recomposited differently after export. That is an editor pipeline issue, but it reinforces that video is not ‘a photo repeated’ — it is a container with temporal structure.

Camera motion versus subject motion

If the camera pans while the subject walks, the face’s pixel coordinates change from two motions combined. A dashcam clip moves the plate relative to the hood and the background. A handheld protest video jitters. Trackers must estimate motion or you fall back to oversized boxes that destroy more of the frame than intended — still missing corners when motion is fast.

Photo redaction rarely faces this unless you are redacting a burst sequence — which is already ‘many photos,’ not one photo.
